Historical Program about the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence - Davidson, NC

The Davidson Historical Society is having a free program this Sunday, the 15th of March 2009, on the history and controversy of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.
The program will be located at the Davidson Town Hall.  meck dec day

Did you know?   The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was allegedly the FIRST declaration of the 13 colonies during the American Revolution.
It was supposedly signed in Charlotte by a committee of local citizens.

The controversy
surrounding the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence is from the fact that the original signed document is not in existence. Some people wonder whether it ever existed.  It was supposedly signed on May 20, 1775. The date is widely known throughout Mecklenburg county's history and is also printed on yellow ribbons on the North Carolina state flag and printed on  the North Carolina state seal.

There was much skepticism about the validity of the document from Thomas Jefferson and many others. Some argue that the Declaration of Independence is a "plagiarized" copy of the Mecklenburg's and others argue that the document was mistaken for a written set of "Resolves".

Today still stands a monument (erected in 1898) behind the old court building in Charlotte to honor the original signers.

We celebrate "Meck Dec Day" every May 20th to honor being the first Americans (North Carolinians)  to declare independence from Great Britain!
